The challenge of photographing Uluru is to capture its essence yet somehow show it as has never been done before. Most photographers try to get very close to Uluru and forget that it is a small part of a much larger landscape. So after visiting and photographing Uluru many times over the years, Damon's plan was to capture it with a greater sense of place. After endless walking around Uluru at all times of day, spread over many weeks, Damon finally found a location amongst the dunes that had a superb foreground and still had Uluru in the background. He then waited for the right skyscape and that chance came after many days when for 5 minutes on a cold, sparkling dawn the sun lit both the dune and distant Uluru as it shone briefly through blue - grey morning cloud.
