In the cold and forbidding seas off the coast of Antarctica many strange sights present themselves. Here, one could imagine storm clouds approaching across a tumultuous ocean or a strange other-worldly ice mountain range rearing up from a Tolkein like landscape. But look a little closer - and what do you see? You are in an inflatable boat, right alongside an iceberg, perhaps 5 metre away. The cold Southern ocean is lapping against the underside of the iceberg and has melted the ice inwards a few metres. The white areas on the top of the photograph are the side of the berg made of ice and snow with lots of air bubbles. The blue areas underneath are very hard, compacted ice. Here, light is coming from behind, shining right through the iceberg - all the red light has dissipated and only blue remains. If you look carefully you can see fluting on the harder ice where sea water has carved beautiful shapes.
