Mawsons Hut, built in 1912 by Australian Antarctic explorer and scientist, Douglas Mawson. The hut was prefabricated in Hobart, carried by ship and rebuilt at Commonwealth Bay, one of Antarctica's most windy spots with winds averaging over 70km per hour throughout the year. Mawson chose this location because during his first visit the winds were calm and gave the impression that this would be a perfect place to set up a base.
